Formerly a ‘childcare desert,’ Seward and the neighboring towns of Staplehurst and Milford have established multiple childcare centers, eliminating the former title. This elimination resulted in a lack of grant funding given to centers, in-home daycares and before and after school care, according to Karen Sabatka, owner of Karen Sabatka’s Daycare.

On Wednesday, July 3, area children are invited to Seward Memorial Library from 9 a.m. to noon to learn about construction in the community and meet some of the workers from Constructors and the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Activities include exploring construction equipment, making handprints and writing in concrete and free snow cones.
Preschoolers are invited to visit the Seward Memorial Library on Tuesday, July 2, at 10 a.m. for a holiday-themed story leading up to our nation’s birthday.
Justin Evertson will present a program Superhero Trees on Tuesday, July 2, at 1 p.m. at the Seward Memorial Library for grades K-5, no registration or limit. Join us to discover the ways trees and their leaves help us every day. After learning about their amazing abilities, we will get creative with a leaf-themed craft activity.
Turtle Time will be Wednesday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at the Seward Memorial Library for grades K-third, no registration or limit. Participants will dive into the adventures of Mossy the Turtle through storytelling and creativity.
A veterans coffee will be every Wednesday from 7:30 – 9:30-ish at the Spare Time Lounge in Seward.
The Seward Farmers Market will be open Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Seward County Fairgrounds, east of the horseshoe pits. The hamburger stand will be run by the Firecracker Dance Group.
The Utica-Beaver Crossing seniors tried to rally late at Wilber July 1, but it wasn't enough in an 8-3 loss. Devin Slawnyk, Ruger Webb and Jack Wellman each drove in runs for the Badgers.
